Why More People Are Choosing UK Staycations in 2026

For years, holidays abroad were seen as the ultimate escape. But recently, more and more people are choosing to stay closer to home. Swapping airport queues and packed resorts for slower, quieter UK breaks that feel easier, calmer and far more personal.

From rising fuel costs and travel disruption to ongoing uncertainty across the world. Many travellers are beginning to rethink what they actually want from a holiday. And increasingly, the answer is not somewhere further away, it is somewhere that allows them to properly switch off.

Recent travel reports suggest that “quiet travel” is set to become one of the biggest travel trends of 2026. With people actively searching for peaceful escapes, slower itineraries and meaningful time away from busy day-to-day life.

At Cheshire Boutique Stays, we are seeing this shift first-hand. Guests are no longer looking for packed schedules or stressful travel days. They want comfort, privacy, nature and places that help them feel calm, rested and safe.

A Countryside Escape

Tucked away in the Cheshire countryside, our Boutique Barns in Wrenbury offer exactly the kind of slower retreat many people are craving right now.

The Barns sleep between two and four guests individually, or all three can be taken together. Offering larger family gatherings, celebrations or group escapes the chance to all be together whilst still retaining private spaces to retreat to. Together, the properties can host up to ten guests, making them perfect for reconnecting with loved ones without the feeling of a busy hotel environment.

The Barns

Each Barn has its own personality. The Old Parlour Barn (slps 4) with surround sound sound, log burner. Huge roll top copper bath that doubles as a hot tub. Its the ideal retreat with views down to the river and woods below.  The Nest is a the smallest of all the barns and for that reason, a firm guests favourite. Cute and cosy with an under cover roll top alfresco bath hidden under the seating of the private courtyard garden. The Cowshed , voted one of the Uk’s most stylish holiday homes is fully dog friendly. Like all the barns it has a romantic mezzanine bedroom looking down onto the open plan kitchen, dining, sitting area complete with log burner and a hidden indoor and outdoor bath.

One of the biggest appeals of staying in the countryside is how easy it becomes to slow down naturally.

Arrive to the fire lit, lamps on low and candles flickering. Soak in a long hot bubble bath under the stars them climb into a ridiculously comfy, crisp white cotton bed. The next day enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading out for a spot of retail therapy in one of the many pretty villages. Walk along the canal next to the barns to Canal Side Garden Café . Enjoy a latte and spend the afternoons exploring places like Bickerton Hill, Cholmondeley Castle Gardens or the Sandstone Trail.  Then spend the evenings relaxing beside the fire and watching your favourite film with surround sound.

Or, just do nothing at all.  After all, the joy of a uk staycation comes from simply doing less.

The Bathhouse, A Boutique Stay in the Heart of Nantwich

For guests who prefer town life but still want peace and privacy, The Bathhouse offers a completely different style of UK staycation.

Located in the centre of Nantwich, this Georgian townhouse combines all the benefits of a boutique luxury hotel with the comfort of having your own private space. With three individually designed suites and a large open plane living, dining kitchen with polished concrete floors warmed by under floor heating. The Bathhouse is ideal for couples, friends or groups wanting to enjoy a stay that feels relaxed and personal rather than formal or crowded.

Guests can spend the day wandering around independent shops, stopping for coffee or a warm almond croissant at the award winning Ginger and Pickles next door, visiting local markets, enjoying live music and cocktails at nearby venues like The Nest by Three Wrens Gin or 9 Mill Street, before returning to their suite for a quiet evening in.

Unlike a traditional hotel, there are no breakfast schedules, no shared spaces and no rushing around. Guests can cook in the Walled Garden kitchen, order in from local restaurants or simply head over to the multi award winning enjoy the slower pace of a few days away.

The Bathhouse sleeps six guests in total, but combined with the Barns nearby, Cheshire Boutique Stays can accommodate up to sixteen guests across both locations. This makes it ideal for extended family celebrations, birthdays, weddings or group retreats where guests can enjoy both countryside calm and vibrant town life during the same trip.

Why UK Staycations Make Sense Right Now

For many people, a UK staycation simply feels easier and more comforting right now. There are no airport delays, luggage restrictions or stressful travel connections. Instead, guests can arrive within a few hours and settle into their stay almost immediately.

It also allows people to reconnect with places much closer to home. Britain is full of beautiful towns, countryside walks, independent food spots and hidden boutique stays that many people have never properly explored.

And perhaps most importantly, UK staycations support local businesses, independent accommodation providers and small communities. Every coffee shop visit, farm shop stop and boutique stay contributes to local tourism and helps preserve the character of places like Nantwich and rural Cheshire.  Eating in within our beautiful properties can feel even more special than going out and can be far more cost effective.

The Rise of Slow Travel

The rise in “quiet travel” and slow tourism is changing the way people think about holidays. More travellers are prioritising rest, nature, wellness and quality time over busy itineraries and packed schedules.

At Cheshire Boutique Stays, we believe some of the best breaks are the simplest ones. A peaceful walk through the countryside. A long lunch in a local pub. Reading a book in the garden. Sleeping properly. Spending uninterrupted time together.

Whether you choose the countryside escape of The Barns or the townhouse charm of The Bathhouse, both offer a slower, calmer kind of luxury that feels increasingly valuable in today’s world.

And sometimes, the best getaway is the one waiting right on your doorstep.
